Introduction to CMA

This course provides a comprehensive foundation in the care of hospitalized patients, designed to equip case management support staff with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed confidently in their role. Participants will gain a clear understanding of hospital workflows, the case management process, and their critical role in supporting care coordination, discharge planning, and patient progression. This program is intended for all support roles within the case management department seeking to build competence, consistency, and confidence in daily practice.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the basics of Medicare payment structure and regulatory notices, including the Important Message from Medicare (IMM), Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON), and Hospital Issued Notice of Noncoverage (HINN). 2. Recognize fundamental patient care needs, including hospital precautions, patient communication and behaviors, and safety considerations such as fall risk, sitters, and restraints. 3. Identify basic patient care needs and common discharge arrangements, including clinical needs (vitals, telemetry, IV access) and post-acute requirements such as wound care, oxygen, dialysis, and specialized equipment.

Marie Stinebuck

Marie Stinebuck, MBA, MSN, ACM, RN is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Phoenix Medical Management. With nearly 30 years of nursing experience, Marie has spent nearly 20 years specializing in case management. Her career has been primarily focused on the acute hospital setting, including the implementation of outpatient case management programs. Marie has held executive leadership roles overseeing case management, utilization review, denials prevention, clinical documentation improvement (CDI), and medical record integrity. She is also the author of numerous articles related to case management, utilization review, and denials prevention. Her true passion is education, and she has been instrumental in expanding Phoenix Medical Management’s education program. Marie has served on the Arizona Board of the American Case Management Association (ACMA) and is certified through the ACMA. She holds an MBA and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus on Nursing Leadership.

Course Agenda and Outline

This course provides foundational knowledge for Case Management Assistants, focusing on the intersection of patient care needs, regulatory requirements, and progression of care. Participants will gain an understanding of Medicare payment basics and required patient notices, while developing the ability to recognize key patient care factors that influence progression of care. The course also introduces common clinical and post-acute needs that impact discharge planning, equipping learners with the knowledge to support care coordination, improve patient flow, and contribute effectively to the case management team.
